Is there a future for new nuclear reactors in Italy?

Diotallevi 2 Room South Hall

The government has initiated a process to relaunch nuclear energy in Italy, focusing on small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. The plan includes support for research, simplification of authorizations, and the goal of integrating nuclear energy with renewables to achieve decarbonization. A draft enabling law has been approved and 7.5 million euros have been allocated for information campaigns on nuclear energy between 2025 and 2026. While nuclear scenarios are being defined, renewables continue to grow, with an increase of 4 GW from January to August 2025.
The debate will serve to compare different viewpoints on Italian energy scenarios.
