The vector driving the energy transition
Hydrogen is one of the key pathways to accelerate decarbonisation, particularly in strategic sectors of the economy such as energy-intensive industries and transportation. In this regard, the European Union aims to reach 20 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030—10 million produced domestically and the other half imported. Europe also holds the world’s largest reserve of green hydrogen projects. In recent years, interest in hydrogen-related technologies has grown steadily, with initiatives increasingly focused on the development of solutions for its production, storage, and transportation.
Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) allocates €3.64 billion in investments to develop the hydrogen supply chain, including €450 million for the creation of 54 Hydrogen Valleys. Italy positions itself as a future European hydrogen hub, thanks to the development of the “Southern Corridor” to transport hydrogen from Mediterranean basin countries in Africa to Northern Europe.
