Event
The decarbonization of industry is a strategic priority for Italy and Europe, as the industrial sector significantly contributes to energy consumption and is heavily dependent on natural gas, with consequent risks for supply security and competitiveness. Many industrial processes require medium and high-temperature heat, for which mature technological alternatives are still limited today, particularly in the chemical, steel, non-metallic materials, paper, and textile sectors.
In this context, Thermal Energy Storage (TES), and particularly Electro-Thermal Energy Storage (ETES), represent a promising solution for the decarbonization of industrial heat and support for the flexibility and stability of the electrical system. Powered by renewable heat and electricity, TES and ETES use non-critical materials, have lower investment costs compared to electrochemical batteries, a long useful life, and high scalability.
The workshop will present the development status of TES/ETES systems at national and European levels, analyzing the main regulatory, economic, and technological barriers to their large-scale diffusion in Italy.
